The other respondents are correct in that they do grind teeth to keep them down. However, they also grind their teeth doing something called bruxing. Usually this is a good sign, and they do it when they are content or happy. Occasionally they also do it when they are anxious or upset (one of mine does it to tell me hes had enough of getting his nails clipped).
If your rats are out playing with you and are grinding your teeth, its a compliment, so be happy you are a good rat parent! Why do rats grind their teeth?
WHAT? What does this have to do with cats? Why do rats grind their teeth?

To keep them from growing out of their mouths. Canine I is correct. Learned that from my daughter. She has a rat rescue.
