some of the replies are a little worrying! you CAN toilet train rats - they are highly inteligent and naturally tend to go in one or two places! at present your rat is a little scared and unsure of her new surroundings and so she is scent marking. toilet training will take time but if you persevere it can be done. firstly, try to see in the cage which area she is using most often and place the litter tray there. then, place any poos you find round the cage in to the litter tray. make sure that the litter you use in the tray is a different material than you use as bedding and to line the cage or you will confuse your rat.
i'm currently in the process of training my 3 new rat boys too - they are VERY timid so i am expecting this to take some time but it'll be worth it in the end!How do you potty train a new member of the family, a rat ?
you really can't. that's why the saying goes ';you DIRTY rat';, not ';you rat';
You can't reli potty train a rat because they don't have a bladder also they will run across you and pee to mark its territory
that is so funny. you cannot train a rat to go in one spot like a dog, my rat monster ran around my room when i let him out for execise. it pooped everywhere even down my shirt when he is on my shoulder. make sure you pet him everyday and get him used to you. and then he might be a biter so be careful.
Its funny that rats can be so smart but the simplest thing seems to be most difficult. None of my rats are or have been potty trained. They pee everywhere to mark their territory (especially in males) and the poo when they usually are nervous. My rats are potty trained in a way. When I let them run around the bathroom, I keep their temperary cage out and open. It is filled with bedding. When they have to go potty, they run in, go and come out to play. You may want to put some droppings and wet bedding in so she gets the idea. She most likely will stop pooing on you after she is more comfortable and if she pees, that means she likes you1
sorry u realli cant potty train them... ive had about 30 rats in my life... and ive never been able 2 lol... sorry!! %26lt;3
It's stress related, normally, when it includes ''on you''. Give her time. If this is her first day in her new home, you shouldn't be handling her anyways. Give her plenty of time to adjust to her new home, before having her adjust to you.
With time, rats'll often pick a certain portion of the cage to use as the bathroom.
To me, none of the answers already said suffice. You CAN potty train a rat. It's easy actually, but takes time. Put a small rodent-litterbox (you can buy at Petco) and small animal litter (also at Petco). Put the litter in the litterbox. Place the litterbox in a corner most used for pooping. When you see poop on the ground, put it in the litterbox. Eventually, the pet will get the message and will start to go in the litterbox. Also, there is a small animal litter that supposedly makes the animal go in there instinctively. It didn't work for my small female rats, because I believe they have to grow up with it. But, since your rat is new, it will probably work. Have fun with your rat and love it to death! (I know you will; I love mine.)
I have a rat named Clover too :)
I'm not sure how to stop them from going to the bathroom all around their cage or on you.. It could be because she is stressed from moving to a new home, and is still scared. Give her time, and she will eventually start using the bathroom in one area of her cage. All mine did.
