Theres no such thing as a cage for one rat, if you are going to get a rat, you need to get 2, lone rats can become depressed and agressive. A cage for 2 rats should be about 2 square feet.

A ten gallon fish tank would be OK for one rat,personally I would use a 50 gallon tank so he had a lot of room to move around and wouldn't hang out in his pee and poo too much.
dont get one rat get 2 they HATE living alone i have a MASSIVE cage for my 2

it cant be a fish tank it has to have bars they love to climb
