How to get rid of a rat problem?

I just dont want them to die inside my walls. The though of dead rat corpse is just as bad as the rats themself. We get a lot of them when the fields are being preped for planting and durning harvest time. How to get rid of a rat problem?
their are several ways you can buy baits that dehydrate the rat and most times they will leave the house and look for water and die.........talon is a good brand in Australia not sure if your in the USA.....you could try mixing spearmint oil and peppermint oil 50-50 soak cotton balls in in and placing them in the roof..smells great but the rodents are repelled by it.....there a some commercial traps that don't kill the rats so you can release them else where or kill and dispose of them yourself......there are electronic repeller that transmit at frequencies that scare them away....i don't have much faith in them.........there is a new trap here but i don't know if they are available elsewhere (as there made in Australia) they cost about $1700 Au they have an attractant and when the rodent enters the trap they drop in to pure alcohol which preserves them(no smell)it can hold up to 30 rats at a time and has a counter to let you know how many rats it has caught ..when full just throw them in the bin the alcohol kill all the germ,,,you may find a similar product over there.....most of our products are from the USA or copies...hope this helpsHow to get rid of a rat problem?
Have you tried getting a cat?
Actually a dog is better than a cat, Some of those rats are the size of a cat!! Seriously, there is no better answer if you dont want to use the commercial Rat-Sak.
We get rats in our garage. My dad taught me a trick to keep them out. Buy Lots and lots of the tree air fresheners that are for you car and hang them all over. The rats cant stand strong smells and will stay away. It really does not matter what scent you buy, just keep it very strong. We have old muscle cars that we have to put up in the winter and line the cars with these to keep mice and rats out and have yet to get one in.
Get a Terrier dog, any kind , they were breed to kill rats. Westies are the best. The female kills, while the male distracts the rodent. They will also kill anything with 4 legs, including Badgers. June Beetles, etc.

Or put out rat traps the none poisonous kind.

Have a lot of cats. We used an exterminator at the Huntington Gardens, they were eating our plants in the greenhouses, we don't how they got in. Hoyakins
