both cought the same diseaseMy pet rats died at the same time. what couldve happened?
There are tons of things that could have happened to kill them. When two animal die close together like that the cause of death is usually environmental.

1. Diseases and parasites. Bacteria and viruses can come from anywhere. You could easily have brought something home from outside on your clothes or skin and transferred it to your rats. Without any visible symptoms it's hard to say if this was the case, but considering all the diseases that can effect rats, it's always a possibility.

2. Chemicals and contaminants. Cleaners, air freshners, candles, incense, pesticides, poisons, and cooking fumes can all be deadly. These things are the reason why the air inside a typical home is more toxic than outside. If you have used something new in your home in the last few weeks I would look at that first.

3. Bad food. There are lots of things that are bad for rats, lots of household plants that are toxic. Any food that was not properly washed is suspect. Commercial pet treats from the pet store often have things like e. coli, fungii, and salmonella. There was a pet rat rescue recently that lost nearly all their rats because a rat treat they got from the pet store was contaminated with rotten poppy seeds.

4. Heat stroke or heart attack. Old age.

Unless you pay your vet to perform a necropsy on your rats, you will probably never know for sure.
my brother fed my pet spider to the chickens confessed at a later date. I have to admit I was mean to him on lots of occasions as he was so spoiled......so did other members of the family approve of your pets. Apart from that it could be something that they ate and obviously shared.....something they found ? Water is also a problem when the weather warms up. Age could be another factor as they only have a life span of a few years 4---5 and time can pass so quickly. Check it out as it may be something that you need to watch for next time. Good luck.
What did you fed them? Is it raw vegetables? Sometimes the vegetables have pesticides and maybe you forgot to wash them?
What did you clean their cage with?

Has anyone been cleaning the area around the cage with harsh chemicals?

That could've done it.
did you give them water? did you read to them? did you kiss them at night?
