How do I end my pack-ratting days for good?

Well, I know that can be very hard for you(emotionally) I went through it with both my grandparents, so I understand. If you think you can stand it, have some one you are close to and value there opinion, to be there to help, some of the times, you go through your ';treasures';. You need to figure out what is trash( preferably with help) and then look to see what items you want or need( items you know you will never, never use!) take those items and donate them to a charity, like Good will, Salvation Army, or even to a local homeless shelter. As for maintaining your clutter, if you cant help to brink stuff home, make sure you have a box of some kind that is for putting the stuff in to donate it, just think to your self all the needy people you will be helping!! If you are having a hard time letting go of some stuff, think about why you really need this, and could it go some where else and serve a better purpose than sitting in your closet, and that by doing this you are being less selfish and turning over a new leaf, have faith in your self, you can do it!How do I end my pack-ratting days for good?
Plan of attack 鈥?which area(s) do you want to address - make a list - evaluate present system, what is working, what isn't working, devise new system - determine budget - develop timeline

Remove items 鈥?start from a clean slate - empty the space completely - remove then sort %26amp; purge

Organize into piles 鈥?donate/toss/sell/keep/relocate - sort like with like - purge excess and what you don't have space for

Containerize 鈥?find storage solutions and designate a space for items being kept - consolidate

Evaluate plan 鈥?how is your system working for you - are you able to work your system? What needs to be modified? A good system should be easy to maintain

Solve/simplify anything that isn鈥檛 working - revise accordingly

Smile, relax and enjoy your hard work! How do I end my pack-ratting days for good?
leah j's answer is good, depending on the severity. You don't say how bad it is, but that is one symptom of OCD. If you're just a saver, follow her advice. If it is much more than that, you need to seek professional help.
